Campaign Story

About the project

In the Kotra block of Udaipur, education of tribal children continues to be a matter of serious concern. Surveys and studies in southern Rajasthan repeatedly indicate that a large number of tribal children drop out after completing primary school or middle school. The major reasons for dropping out early from school besides poverty is the poor quality of education, non-availability and lack of accountability among teachers.

Making a difference

CRY America’s Project KAS is working to build capacity in the communities for ensuring quality education for children and engaging with the community and schools for mainstreaming drop out and never been to school children. The activities which take place under the project are providing information on health and hygiene related infrastructure gaps with SMC to ensure improvement for controlling COVID-19 pandemic in schools. Right to education, child protection and child labor issues are raised and advocated in the meetings of the Gram Sabha, linking families with social security schemes.

Story of dreams

Rakhi’s father died in 2017 due to illness. She was the eldest of the siblings, so she had to support her mother in taking care of household chores. Her school was around 2 km away from her village; to reach there; she had to cross two big drains and climb down the hill where her house was located.

So, when her father died, her mother made her drop out of school. When the KAS staff surveyed the village, they learned about Rakhi. Staff asked Rakhi’s mother to send her to school, but she denied saying that Rakhi helps her with agriculture and household work. She believed that what will girls do by going to school. In the end, they have to look after the house only. The field staff shared with Rakhi’s mother a story of one of the girls who had taken up a government job after completing her studies.

They also told her about other girls who were visiting the center run by the organization. The staff shared how girls enjoy visiting the center and also explained about the different activities organized in the center like sports, songs, drawing etc. They also shared how girls have picked up subjects like Mathematics and English.

Listening to all this, Rakhi’s mother agreed to bring her to the center. Today, Rakhi has picked up her Math and other subjects and is happy to attend classes. She says she will not leave her studies and aims to become a doctor.
