Campaign Story

About the project

In the Champaran district the existing health care facility is in dilapidated condition. The main barrier of accessibility is distance from the village and poor quality such as lack of medicines and non-availability of doctors. Due to inaccessibility of health services, the burden of home delivery is still prevalent. Maternal health and nutrition, as well as adolescent nutrition, have important consequences for intergenerational transmission of malnutrition.

Making a difference

CRY America Project CHARDS has been working towards improved access to quality primary health care in 20 villages. The key activities of the project are sensitizing the community on various mother and child health issues, exploring alternatives for ensuring education of the children, and capacity building of adolescent and adolescent resource centers.

Action During COVID-19 Times

● During COVID-19 times, team conducted home visits in regular interval to provide orientation, counseling and need based early referral of Pregnant and Lactating mothers to nearest health institutions
● COVID-19 awareness rally were done in 3 Gram Panchayat with active participation of ASHA, AWW, ANM

Kavita Devi fought all odds!

20 year-old Kavita Devi from East Champaran, Bihar was on her way to becoming a mother. Her husband had to move to Haryana for work because of increased financial stress and a baby on the way. Kavita was left in the care of her mother-in-law.

One day, Kavita started feeling weak and noticed inflammation in her feet. Worried, Kavita went to her mother-in-law, who dismissed her and told her there was nothing to worry about. During the home visits, CRY’s project CHARDS team noticed Kavita’s condition and suspected that she was anemic and immediately escorted her to the nearest Anganwadi Center for a check-up. She was diagnosed with severe anemic disease and was referred to a nearby hospital for proper care. After returning from the hospital, the project staff, the Anganwadi Worker and Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) kept a constant check on Kavita’s condition to ensure both mother and baby were healthy.

The situation worsened when floods hit their locality in August, the entire village was submerged, and the community had to take shelter at a nearby elevated narrow strip of land. Kavita began feeling labor pains, and her helpless mother-in-law could only think of home delivery as the next step. When CRY’s project team was notified about Kavita’s situation, the team got a boat which ferried her to the hospital.

Reaching just in time, Kavita gave birth to a baby girl. The baby was born underweight; CRY project CHARDS ensured proper nutrition counseling and helped the newborn reach a healthy weight within one week.
