Campaign Story
About the project
Villages in Latur district face various challenges; one of the biggest challenges is that people don’t have livelihood opportunities, and families have to migrate to sugarcane farms for cultivation. Children have to leave their schools for 3 to 4 months and go with their parents. For higher classes, children have to travel very far, which is unsafe and causes a financial burden on the family. The rate of child marriage in the area is also 30-35%.
Making a difference
Through the support of CRY America project KMAGVS, the community has found hope to overcome these challenges. The project works directly to provide residential hostels and enrol children in school. The project also works towards strengthening community-based organizations and sensitizing stakeholders on child rights issues focusing on child marriage and child labor.
The way forward
● Enhance enrolment, retention, regularity and transition through community engagement
● Improve educational outcome achievements and results in board examinations
● Strengthen communities to protect children from child labor, child marriage, child sexual abuse, substance abuse and physical abuses
● Formation and strengthening of child collectives and adolescent collectives in the operational area

Relentless efforts saved Rani from Child Marriage
Rani, a 16-year old girl from a low-income family in Latur, helps her parents to earn a living by working in agriculture fields. She completed her 10th in 2021, and after that, her family decided to get her married without her consent.
Rani is part of an adolescent group and shared her information about child marriage with the Anganwadi Worker. With the help of the project staff, the Anganwadi worker counseled Rani’s family and explained the ill effects of early marriage.
Rani’s mother remained adamant and kept telling the team that they didn’t have money to support her education and believed she was weak in her studies.
The Anganwadi worker and Project team member worked extensively at counselling her parents. At last her parents gave up on the relentless effort and got her admitted to class 11th in Shivaji Nagar School in Bittergaon this year.
