About the project

The project works in 35 villages of Orissa towards issues of health, nutrition, and participation. The work is focused at establishing free primary health care services, monitoring overall health of the children, nutritional food habits and working towards the adverse effects built in the community due to COVID-19.

Making a difference

CRY America Project SPREAD is working to provide access to basic healthcare services to pregnant women and lactating mothers. Reduction of malnutrition among the children between the age of 6 months to 5 years and anemia reduction among the pregnant and adolescent girls. The key activities under the project are growth monitoring of children at ICDS center, counseling to parents for home management practices for reduction of malnutrition.

Action during COVID times

● Project supported dry ration, hygiene kits to 2007 vulnerable families
● Project supported 90 Jumbo Oxygen cylinders, 100 Oxygen flow meters, 10 thousands N-95 Masks, 500 Oximeters

The way forward

● Meeting with the villagers at community level for developing a health action plan
● Village level sensitization programme for facilitating the institutional birth delivery
● Growth monitoring of the children from 6 months to 6 years reported by mothers
● Meeting with adolescent girls on anemia, health and hygiene
● Training of the adolescent girls group to act as agents to stop child marriage in their village

Dhanesh survived through adversities

Dhanesh was born as an underweight child weighing only 1 kg and 220 gms in Godhinjar village.

Project SPREAD team members persuaded the family to send the child to Children Health Council (CHC), but there was no improvement in his health. The team counseled Dhanesh’s parents about sending him regularly to Village Health, Sanitation and Nutrition Day (VHSNDs). After that, every month, VHSND health check-ups were done for Dhanesh, and he was immunized on time. His mother assured exclusive breastfeeding for him. But still, there was no improvement either. So finally, SPREAD team members told the parents to send the child to the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Mother & child stayed there for a week. Now Dhanesh’s health is better & he weighs 4.5kgs. The parents are happy that their son is healthy and doing well.
